explicit that they
are downright
criminal? Maybe it’s
a question best left
unanswered, seeing
as the true meaning
is shared by
ferociously in-love
couple Cassady
Fernandez and Joel
Control. No need
for an enigma,
though, because the
SexyCrimes
repertoire is made
up of joyous punk
pop nugs that mix
high energy and
reverence for their
loved ones (most
song titles are full
names of one of
their friends) with
a low-periphery
drive that goes
straight for the
heart, or the
genitals if you’re
feeling up for it.
It’s as simple as
that and it’s fun as
hell.

Fun indeed… those
who are further in
on the Viva circle
might recognize
Cassady’s name from
the days when she
was part of the Viva
crew. Whether or not
she still has to
answer to Mattwert’s
(increasingly)
outlandish demands,
she’s still a
fantastic presence
in the studio -
and while it’s not
the first time she’s
been on the other
end of a mic in the
booth, this 59th
Me + You still
marks a nice reunion
in our books.

And boy do they have
some funny tales
to tell since
they relocated from
NYC to Richmond,
VA… from
recollections of a
first show that
involved a
hilariously named
Ska band to an
Orlando, FL show
that fell through
giving way to a
beachside camp-out,
this lovely couple
and dynamic duo of
punks definitely
have an energy
between and around
them that makes for
a worthwhile
listening
experience.
