Me + You 66: Findlay Brown on Viva Radio

Taking one look at
Findlay
Brown
, we knew
that this was going
to be a different
type of Me
+ You
. Not being
the kind of
organization to
immediately judge a
book by its cover,
it’s not even like
we could make an
immediate assessment
of what this fellow
was all about: an
appearance that was
equal parts early
60′s teen idol

(complete with
pompadour, a newly
acquired hairstyle
which he
disparagingly
referred to as
“just-joined-the-army Elvis”)
and modern chic,

sporting gear that
one would indeed
pick up in NYC or
London. Yet despite
the lofty looks, the
man’s bone-dry
Yorkshire accent
brings him right
back down to Earth.
After all, he is
from York, shelving
the New for
something a bit more
classic.

Classic sounds are
what we got out of
this modern day
troubadour
inspired by the
likes of Roy
Orbison, The
Ronettes, Dionne
Warwick, early
Beatles (still his
#1)
, and an
off-the-record
exchange would
reveal a liking for
Bert
Jansch
, which is
arguably very
detectable in the
gentle delivery that
Brown employs.
Gentleness is quite
appropriate in this
case, as the songs
are nice ‘n
delicate. As he
sings, his voice
quivers in a
register that is
somewhat lower and
richer than his
eye-wink speaking
voice, especially
when he uses it to
hit some lovely high
notes. It’s as if
he’s humming out the
words, which seem to
flutter together
seamlessly.
Sounds like a
craft that’s been
honed and untouched
for years.

Rather surprising
when it is explained
to us that he
formerly fronted and
played bass in a
neo-psychedelic
exotica electronica
group before going
solo a couple years
back.

Findlay’s
background, as well
as his slick
snicker, reveals
a sort of
fraternally cool
vibe
in that he
indeed did and does
roll around with
“mates” that would
love to kick your
ass. That being
said, the guy
clearly believes in
these heartfelt
songs that belie his
friendly and tough
demeanor; the tunes
are woven with
vulnerable melodies
and he’s got balls
to lay himself bare
this way. Balls that
he actually
discusses in this
very chummy
interview, wherein
Tedward clearly is
enjoying
himself.

Honestly, I think
we’ll be seeing
these two skipping
around Greenpoint
all too soon, Barack
in tow.

This is a classic
session, so do tune
in to Me
+ You Pt. 66
and
consider yourself
“in the know” before
the January
5th
release of
Findlay’s new album
Love Will Find
You
, his
January 12th
appearance on The
Late Show With David
Letterman
, and
January 13th
show at Joe’s
Pub
in New York
City. Ha-cha-cha!
