Dutch hexperimental
duo The
Moi Non Plus
have a special
connection to Viva.
The two sorcerers
behind this
self-proclaimed
“loud drum guitar
sample” outfit are
non other than
Bas & Leon,
luminaries of the
scene digest / event
brand Subbacultcha
and keepers of the
American underground
on their Viva
Radio show of the
same name.

Although these two
benevolent
Netherlanders are no
strangers to playing
stateside, CMJ
2009 was as good an
excuse as ever to
lure them back to
their would-be
colony. After
taking part in the
Viva/Pukekos/Subbacultcha
(duh!) showcase,
they popped over to
the studio for what
is the 2nd and final
installment in our
Double Dutch saga
here at Viva.

Taking cues from
groups like These
Are Powers, Liars,
and Health, the
sounds explored in
The Non Moi Plus’
material err on
today’s more
irreverent strains
of music as
opposed to the more
<retrogazing outfits
that Bas and Leon
champion in their
magazine and
playlists. With
half-muted drums
for insured
tick-tock
timekeeping and
motorik-defying
polyrhythms
courtesy of Bas and
loops galore
via very Leon’s very
textural guitar
playing, this duo
transcended the
confines of the
small studio
space while
still producing an
atmosphere that
suggested a sense of
claustrophobia.
Captivating!

The tension only
rises when you
realize that there
is a third living,
breathing, and
sweating adult male
in the room, and
that is none other
than Tedward.
