Yesterday, American
Apparel won Apparel
Magazine‘s first
annual
Sustainability
All-Star award.
After our nomination
by
the California
Fashion
Association
(Levi’s nominated
themselves, but
after 150 years of
awesomeness, we’re
willing to overlook
it), the editors
chose American
Apparel because they
believed we’d made
“significant steps
toward incorporating
sustainable best
practices.” As great
as it feels to be
recognized by groups
who care about the
environment, it should
be known that
American Apparel
doesn’t think its
ethical
decisions are
justified by pats on
the backs. The
growing success of
the business is
the validation that
the ideas need.
Being
vertically-integrated helps
the company make
smart, human
decisions like
turning fabric
scraps into cool new
products like our braided
belts. Because
we’re all here under
one roof, we’re are
able to turn
negatives into
positives (limited
parking
becomes a bike
sharing program and
subsidized bus
passes).
Finally, because the
employees know one
another’s faces,
nobody tolerates
exploitation or
waste (high wages,
recycling program).
Still, we’re excited
about the award and
are honored that
Apparel Magazine and
the CFA thought of
us. Check out our
cool trophy
below.
